1. When is my trash, recycling, and yard waste pick-up day?

You can find out what day of the week trash, recycling, and yard waste is picked up by contacting the City Street and Storm Maintenance Division at 816-439-4517.

2. What can I recycle in the new cart?

Corrugated cardboard, paperboard or chipboard, cardboard soft drink and beer boxes, Kraft bags (brown paper), mail and junk mail with envelopes and paper back books.
Aluminum Cans.
Steel cans and tins (including empty aerosol cans).
Aseptic packaging and gable top containers (milk and juice cartons).
Newspaper, magazines, advertising inserts, phone books, junk mail, catalogs and office papers.
Plastics: The numbers below are found in chasing arrows on the bottoms of plastic containers.
#1 - soda, water and flavored beverage bottles (#1 clear and green).
#2 - Milk and juice jugs (clear).
#2 - detergent and fabric softener containers (colored).
#3 - narrow neck containers only (health and beauty products, household cleaners).
#4 - grocery containers (margarine tubs, frozen desert cups, six and 12 pack rings).
#5 - grocery containers (yogurt cups and narrow neck syrup and ketchup bottles).
Plastic buckets, such as kitty litter buckets (5 gallon maximum size).

3. Can I recycle glass?

Residents can recycle GLASS at the drop off facility. This is a FREE service offered by Ripple Glass. Just look for the purple recycling bin at the drop-off facility located at 400 Suddarth.

4. What CANNOT be recycled in the new carts?

Motor oil, insecticides, herbicides, hazardous chemical containers.
Plastic grocery bags (many grocery stores will recycle these for you!).
Plastic film (no plastic sheets, tarps or wraps).
#6 Polystyrene (PS) (such as packaging pellets or "Styrofoam peanuts," cups, plastic tableware, meat trays and to-go "clam shell" containers).
Plastic cards, stick on labels or unused stamps.
Hard cover books.

5. How can I dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?

Liberty Area residents may participate at no charge in the Regional Household Hazardous Waste collection program. This includes access to permanent facilities in Kansas City and Lee's Summit, plus access to a mobile event held in Liberty each fall.

Please keep waste materials in their original containers and do not mix them.

6. Where can I dispose of tree limbs?

A tree limb disposal yard is available during fall and spring clean-up and often after major storms. The disposal site is located on new 210 Highway, approximately ½ mile east of Highway 291. Residents should watch for signage on the north side of new 210 Highway identifying the site area. Only tree limbs may be brought to the area. Other yard waste will not be accepted. No commercial vehicles will be allowed to access the site.

7. When are the City-wide Annual Clean-up Weeks?

During the last full weeks of April and October, the City sponsors clean-up weeks that give residents an opportunity to dispose of excess trash, furniture, minor maintenance materials and carpet.

8. Can I use my own cart and old recycle bin?

Use of the carts provided by Allied Waste Services for solid waste and recycling is required as they are constructed specifically for use with semi-automated/automated collection vehicle equipment.

9. Why do we have so many recycling carts?

Carting for the collection of residential solid waste has been common in many areas of the country for several years. The semi-automated or fully automated collection system has proven to be faster, safer, cleaner, and more economical to consumers.

This new program also is intended to help the environment by reducing what is sent to landfills, and thereby making recycling easier. The sturdy, lidded carts also will help keep our community clean by making it more difficult for critters to overturn your trash cans. And as an added benefit, Allied Waste will rebate the City 50% of the value of all recycling collected

10. Why are the carts so large?

The carts are large, particularly the recycling carts, to make recycling easier for residents, especially now that more materials are accepted for recycling. They are also the most common sized carts used for this type of program.

The City recognizes that there are situations in certain segments of the community concerning aspects of the program. Staff has worked with Allied Waste to develop alternatives for those with special circumstances.

11. What do I do with my carts if I am moving or relocating?

The trash and yard waste carts are the property of Allied Waste Services. Each container is assigned to a specific address. If a resident moves or relocates the container is to remain at the property.

12. What are the benefits of a carted collection system?

Containers are on wheels for easy roll out to the curb.
Containers are sturdy and durable to reduce tipping and spilling.
Containers help neighborhoods look neater and cleaner.

13. Do we need to set the carts out in a special way?

Be sure to place your cart so that the arrows on top of the lid face toward the street. Doing so will allow the drivers to run quicker and smoother pickups, making their routes more efficient. If possible try to ensure your carts are far enough away from any obstacles (trees, poles, mailboxes, cars, etc.) so that the automated arm on the trash truck can easily reach your cart.

14. Do my recyclables need to be bagged and tied?

No. Additional, recyclables do not need to be separated. Simply add materials to your cart as generated.

15. Do I have to take advantage of curbside recycling?

You can choose to utilize the curbside recycling program with the carts or to take your recyclables to the City's drop-off collection center at 400 Suddarth.

The City's recycling program is paid for with the sanitation service charge on residents' water bills. Payment for recycling is required whether or not residents participate in curbside recycling collection. The fees for trash and recycling help fund some of the other sanitation services in the City's program.

16. What does this cost me?

Less than the previous sanitation service! The cost of this sanitation service is just $11.85 per month. This is a reduction over the previous service monthly cost of $13.55 (14% decrease) on your utility bill for sanitation services.

17. How do I return the yellow lidded recycling cart if I don't want the cart and/or don't want to use curbside recycling collection?

For those residents wishing NOT to participate in the City's curbside recycling program the yellow lidded recycling cart can be returned to Allied Waste Services.

Residents are reminded that curbside collection of recycled materials will only be made from yellow lidded carts provided by Allied Waste Services.

Residents may continue to use the City drop-off recycling center located at 400 Suddarth in lieu of using curbside collection.
